| High Protein Low Carbohydrate Diet During Pregnancy Makes Healthier Future Adult | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Healthy Low Carb Diet Babies Grown into Healthy Adults Pregnant women can now follow a modified low carb diet, just like 32 million Americans, and help make their babies grow into healthier adults according to a new study. Researchers in England ( you can read the abstract of this article here) found that FEMALE pups born to mice fed a high protein, low carbohydrate, high UNSATURATED fat diet during pregnancy and while nursing had lower triglyceride levels as adults than baby mice fed a standard high carbohydrate, low fat diet. In addition, females had higher amounts of fat burning proteins than those fed the standard diet. And they looked so cute too! This effect was not as prominent in male mice, which goes to show there is indeed a gender difference in metabolism. So what does this mean for your baby's future? Plenty. Lower triglycerides and better fat burning metabolism can prevent obesity, let alone coronary artery disease, which knocks off thousands of Americans a year. But there was another surprising finding: when the baby mice fed the low carb diet were later fed a high carb diet as adults: they still demonstrated significantly lower triglyceride levels as well as more of the liver proteins that help metabolize fat. WHOA! So now we know that both expectant moms and their future toddlers can benefit from a low carb diet.
